Every object you add to a Powtoon — including images, shapes, and text — starts at 100% opacity, meaning it is fully solid with no transparency. You can reduce the opacity of any object to make it more transparent. This is useful when you want to layer objects, soften a background image, or lighten a color without changing it entirely.
When to adjust opacity
Reducing an object's opacity is helpful in several situations:
- Making an image lighter so it does not interfere with text placed on top of it.
- Softening the color of a shape or graphic element.
- Layering objects so that items beneath a semi-transparent object remain visible — for example, placing a magnifying glass graphic over a document and reducing its opacity so the document shows through.
How opacity and transparency relate
Opacity and transparency work on opposite ends of the same scale. A higher opacity value means the object is more solid and less see-through. A lower opacity value means the object is more transparent and less solid. At 100% opacity, the object is fully solid. At 0% opacity, the object would be invisible.
How to change the opacity of an object
- Select the object on the stage whose opacity you want to change.
- Click the Settings gear icon that appears above the selected object.
- In the menu that opens, click Opacity.
► The opacity slider appears. By default, it is set to 100%. - Drag the slider left to increase transparency (lower opacity) or right to increase solidity (higher opacity) until you reach the level you want.
The change applies immediately to the selected object on the stage.
Notes
- Opacity applies to the entire object. You cannot apply different opacity levels to individual parts of a single object.
- Opacity changes affect how the object appears during playback and in your exported Powtoon.
- Text objects support opacity adjustment in the same way as image and shape objects.
