Many objects in Powtoon Studio can be recolored directly on the stage. This article covers every method available: selecting a basic color, entering a hex code, building a custom color, sampling a color from the stage, and applying a color filter.
Check whether an object can be recolored
Not every object supports color changes. To find out whether an object can be recolored, select it on the stage. If the object supports color changes, a Color icon or a Color Filter icon will appear in the toolbar.
- Color icon — appears as either a solid color swatch or a multi-colored swatch, depending on the object type.
- Color Filter icon — appears as three overlapping circles.
If neither icon appears after you select the object, that object cannot be recolored.

Using basic colors
To change an object's color using a preset swatch, follow these steps.
- Select the object on the stage.
- Click the Color icon. The color picker opens.
- Under Basic Colors, click the color swatch you want to apply. The color is applied to the object immediately.
Using a hex color code
To apply an exact color using a hex (hexadecimal) code, follow these steps.
- Select the object on the stage.
- Click the Color icon. The color picker opens.
- In the hex code field directly below the Basic Colors swatches, type the exact 6-character hex code for the color you want. The color is applied to the object.
- If you want to reuse this color in the future, click the + button to save it to My Colors. The color will be available in My Colors for all future sessions.
Creating a custom color
To mix a color manually using the color picker sliders, follow these steps.
- Select the object on the stage.
- Click the Color icon. The color picker opens.
- Click the arrow next to the hex code field to expand the full color picker.
- Drag one or both sliders to dial in the color you want. The preview updates as you drag.
- If you want to reuse this color in the future, click the + button to save it to My Colors.
To delete a saved custom color: hover over the color swatch in My Colors and click the x that appears.
Using the Color Sampler
The Color Sampler lets you pick up any color visible on the stage and apply it to a selected object, background, or text element.
- Select the object you want to recolor.
- Click the Color icon. The color picker opens.
- Click Color Sampler. Your cursor changes to an eyedropper icon.
- Move the eyedropper over the stage. As you hover over objects, the detected color is previewed in the color picker.
- When the eyedropper is over the color you want to sample, click to apply that color to your selected object.
For example, if you hover the eyedropper over a dark green leaf on the stage, the color picker previews that dark green. Clicking applies it to whichever object you selected in step 1.
Using the Color Filter
The Color Filter applies a monochromatic (single-color) tint over an object rather than replacing its colors outright. Only objects that display the Color Filter icon (three overlapping circles) support this option.
- Select the object you want to tint.
- Click the Color Filter icon. The color picker opens.
- Select the color you want to use as the filter. The tint is applied to the object immediately.
Removing a color filter
To remove a color filter from an object, select the object and click Clear Filter in the color picker. The filter is removed and the object returns to its original appearance.
Note: The Color Sampler works only with colors visible on the current stage. It cannot sample colors from outside the Powtoon Studio window.
