The aspect ratio you choose controls two things: the working area on the stage and how your Powtoon appears when published. Set the aspect ratio before you start adding content — changing it later may affect how objects are positioned on the stage.
Before you start
The aspect ratio setting is available in Powtoon Studio. Open or create a Powtoon to access it.
How to set the aspect ratio
- Open your Powtoon in Powtoon Studio.
- Locate the Stage Tools section at the top of the slide area.
- Select the aspect ratio that matches your intended publishing destination (see the options below).
Aspect ratio options
Horizontal (16:9) — default
The horizontal 16:9 ratio is the default setting. Use this ratio if you plan to publish your Powtoon to YouTube or Vimeo. With this ratio, you can place objects anywhere on the full stage.
Square (1:1)
The square 1:1 ratio is best for publishing to Facebook or Instagram. With this ratio, only the centre of the stage is the active working area. Objects placed in the shaded areas outside the centre will not appear in the published Powtoon.
Vertical (9:16)
The vertical 9:16 ratio is designed for content viewed primarily on mobile devices or published as an Instagram Story. As with the square ratio, only the centre of the stage is active. Objects placed in the shaded areas will not appear in the published Powtoon.
Note: For the square (1:1) and vertical (9:16) ratios, the shaded areas on the stage are visible while editing but will not be displayed in your published or exported Powtoon. Keep all key content within the unshaded centre area.
