AI Avatar (within Powtoon Imagine) lets you place a realistic, animated avatar into any scene in Powtoon Studio. Once you add a voiceover and click Generate Lipsync, the avatar's mouth and body motion sync to the audio — turning a static image into a lifelike animation.
Eligibility: You must have a Powtoon premium subscription and enough AI Credits to use AI Avatar. See Can I use AI Avatars? for plan details.
AI Credits cost: Generating an avatar costs 20 AI Credits per minute of voiceover — approximately 1 AI Credit per 3 seconds. For example, a 33-second voiceover costs 11 AI Credits. AI Credits are charged when you click Generate Lipsync.

Adding a new AI Avatar to your scene
Use these steps to add a new avatar character to a scene for the first time.
- Open your Powtoon in Powtoon Studio and click the Avatar tab in the left panel.
- Click Avatars to browse available avatar characters.
- Click the avatar you want to add to the scene. The avatar appears on the stage as a preview.
► If you want to use an avatar you have already generated, see Adding an existing avatar to your scene below instead. - Click the Voice icon on the avatar.
- Add a voiceover to the avatar.
- Click Generate Lipsync to sync the voiceover to the avatar.
► Generation can take up to a few minutes depending on voiceover length. You can continue editing your Powtoon while it processes in the background.
► Clicking Generate Lipsync deducts AI Credits from your account.
Note: Until you click Generate Lipsync, the voiceover is linked to the avatar but the avatar is not yet generated. The audio will play, but the avatar remains a static preview.
Adding an existing avatar to your scene
If you have already created an avatar in a previous session, you can add it to a new scene without generating it again.
- Open your Powtoon in Powtoon Studio and click the Avatar tab in the left panel.
- Click My Avatars.
- Click the avatar you want to add to the scene. The avatar appears on the stage.
- Click the Voice icon on the avatar.
- Add a voiceover to the avatar.
- Click Generate Lipsync to sync the voiceover to the avatar.
► Generation can take up to a few minutes. You can continue editing while it processes.
► Clicking Generate Lipsync deducts AI Credits from your account.
Note: Until you click Generate Lipsync, the voiceover is linked to the avatar but the avatar is not yet generated. The audio will play, but the avatar remains a static preview.
Generating an avatar (lip-sync)
Generating an avatar is the process of syncing audio to the avatar character. This animates the avatar's mouth and adds general body motion, turning the static image into a lifelike animation. You can trigger generation from any avatar already placed on the stage.
- Select the avatar on the stage that you want to generate.
- Click the Voice icon on the avatar.
- Add a voiceover to the avatar.
- Click Generate Lipsync to begin generation.
► Generation can take up to a few minutes depending on voiceover length. You can continue editing while it processes.
► Clicking Generate Lipsync deducts AI Credits from your account at a rate of 20 AI Credits per minute (approximately 1 AI Credit per 3 seconds).
Note: Until you click Generate Lipsync, the voiceover is linked to the avatar but the avatar is not yet generated. The audio will play, but the avatar remains a static preview.
Reusing a generated avatar
Once an avatar has been generated, you can reuse it across multiple scenes or Powtoons without spending additional AI Credits.
- Open your Powtoon in Powtoon Studio and click the Avatar tab in the left panel.
- Click My Avatar Videos.
- Click the generated avatar you want to add to the scene. The avatar is added to the stage.
Changing the avatar view
Some avatar characters support multiple viewing angles — for example, front-facing or side-facing. Characters that support view changes display a view-change icon in the avatar panel. Avatars always enter the scene in front view by default.
Note: Switching a generated avatar to a different view (for example, from front to side) requires a new AI generation and will deduct additional AI Credits. A notification appears in Powtoon Studio when you attempt to switch the view of an already-generated avatar.
- Select an avatar on the stage that displays the view-change icon.
- Click the settings gear icon on the avatar.
- Hover over View in the settings menu.
- Select the view you want to apply.
The avatar view updates on the stage. If the avatar was already generated, you will need to click Generate Lipsync again to regenerate with the new view.
