What a VEO 3 prompt is made of
A VEO 3 prompt is the text instruction you write to describe the video you want to generate. Think of it as a blueprint: the more clearly you describe your vision, the more accurately VEO 3 can interpret it.
Every prompt can include some or all of the following components:
- Subject or topic: What the video is about.
- Tone or mood: The feeling you want to convey — for example, professional, playful, urgent, or calm.
- Style or aesthetics: How the video should look — for example, minimalist, vibrant, futuristic, or hand-drawn.
- Key message or call to action (optional but recommended): What you want your audience to take away or do.
- Specific elements (optional): Particular visuals, sounds, or text you want included or excluded.
Core prompting principles
These principles apply to every prompt you write for VEO 3, regardless of the use case.
- Be clear and direct. Avoid jargon or complex sentences. State your subject, tone, and style without unnecessary filler.
- Be specific, but not restrictive. Give VEO 3 enough detail to understand your vision while leaving room for creative interpretation. For example, instead of "a person," try "a young woman in a green jacket."
- Use keywords. VEO 3 responds well to precise, descriptive keywords related to your topic, tone, and visual style.
- Structure your prompt. A structured prompt — using distinct phrases or clauses for each component — tends to produce more consistent results than a single run-on sentence.
- Iterate and refine. If your first result isn't quite right, adjust one element of your prompt and generate again. Small changes can produce noticeably different outputs.
Prompt structure formats
You can adapt any of the three formats below to match your use case. Each format is a starting point — combine or modify them as needed.
Simple and direct
Use this format for quick, focused prompts: [Subject/Topic] + [Tone] + [Style]
Example: "A short video explaining quantum physics, educational and clear, with clean, modern animations."
Descriptive and detailed
Use this format when you want precise control over tone, style, and message:
"Create a video about [Subject/Topic]. The tone should be [Tone], and the visual style should be [Style]. Include [Specific Element] and emphasize [Key Message]."
Example: "Create a video about the benefits of remote work. The tone should be inspiring and optimistic, and the visual style should be bright and collaborative, featuring diverse people working from various locations. Emphasize improved work-life balance."
Scenario-based
Use this format when you want VEO 3 to build a narrative around a specific situation:
"Imagine a scenario where [Scenario]. Generate a video that showcases [Key Event or Process] with a [Tone] and [Style]."
Example: "Imagine a scenario where a small business is launching a new product. Generate a video that showcases the excitement of the launch with an energetic tone and a sleek, minimalist style."
Advanced prompt techniques
Once you're comfortable with the basic formats, these techniques give you more control over specific elements of your generated video.
Character and avatar specification
Describe who appears in the video with enough detail to match your intended message.
- "A friendly robot explaining renewable energy."
- "A diverse group of students collaborating on a project."
► If the character's appearance is relevant to your message, include details such as age, attire, and setting.
Setting and environment
Describe where the action takes place to anchor the visual context.
- "A bustling city at night."
- "A serene forest with sunlight filtering through trees."
- "A futuristic office space with holographic displays."
Action and movement
Specify how the camera and characters should move to shape the pacing and energy of the video.
- "Dynamic camera movements."
- "Smooth transitions between scenes."
- "Characters walking and interacting."
Text overlays and on-screen graphics
You can request on-screen text or graphic elements as part of your prompt.
- "Include on-screen text highlighting key statistics."
- "Display the product name prominently."
Note: VEO 3 will attempt to integrate text naturally, but on-screen text accuracy is not guaranteed. Review generated videos before publishing.
Audio and music
Describe the audio atmosphere you want to accompany the visuals.
- "Upbeat background music."
- "Calm, ambient sounds."
- "A professional voiceover with a clear, authoritative tone."
Exclusion keywords
Use the words "without," "no," or "avoid" to explicitly exclude elements you don't want in the video.
- "A marketing video for a coffee shop, without any people shown."
- "An explainer video for complex software, no overly technical jargon on-screen."
Ready-to-use prompt examples
The examples below are organized by use case. Copy and adapt them to match your content.
Marketing and sales
- "Generate a short, energetic promotional video for a new fitness app. Show people exercising with the app on their phones. Focus on convenience and quick results. Vibrant, modern aesthetic."
- "Create a sleek, professional video showcasing a luxury car. Emphasize speed and elegance with dynamic camera angles and a sophisticated color palette. Include close-ups of interior details."
Education and explainer
- "Produce an animated explainer video about the water cycle for elementary school students. Use bright, engaging colors and simple, friendly characters. Keep the language accessible."
- "A detailed, informative video about the history of artificial intelligence. Professional tone, with a timeline graphic and illustrative examples of key milestones. Clean, academic style."
Internal communications and HR
- "An upbeat video welcoming new employees to the company. Show diverse team members collaborating in a positive, inclusive work environment. Friendly and approachable style."
- "Create a concise video outlining a new cybersecurity policy. Professional and clear tone, with simple infographics explaining key rules. Avoid alarmist imagery."
Personal and creative
- "A whimsical animated video about a dream where I can fly. Bright, surreal colors and fluid character movement. Playful and imaginative."
- "Generate a relaxing video of a serene beach at sunset. Focus on gentle waves and calming colors. Include soft, ambient background sounds."
Troubleshooting your prompts
If VEO 3 isn't producing the results you expect, use the guidance below to diagnose and adjust your prompt.
The result is too generic
Your prompt may lack enough descriptive detail. Add specific adjectives for style, tone, and visual elements.
- Less effective: "A video about nature."
- More effective: "A calming video of a lush, vibrant rainforest with exotic birds and gentle waterfalls, focusing on biodiversity."
The result is too rigid or repetitive
Your prompt may be over-specified. Broaden one or two terms to give VEO 3 more creative latitude, or remove constraints that aren't essential to your message.
The result is unexpected or off-topic
Review your prompt for ambiguous terms. Break complex ideas into shorter, distinct phrases or clauses. Ambiguity in one part of a prompt can affect the entire output.
General refinement tips
- Always anchor your prompt to what you want your audience to feel or understand — this helps VEO 3 prioritize the right visual and audio elements.
- Experiment with synonyms. Different keywords can produce noticeably different outputs from the same underlying concept.
- Use exclusion keywords — "without," "no," or "avoid" — whenever there is something specific you want to keep out of the video.
Note: Each generation uses AI Credits. If you run out of AI Credits, you will not be able to generate additional videos until your credits are replenished. See your plan details for AI Credits allocation.
