What is Powtoon Capture and how do I use it?

Powtoon Capture is a Chrome extension that lets you record your screen, your face via webcam, or both at the same time — without leaving your browser. After you stop recording, your capture is saved automatically and ready to share.

Powtoon Capture is available to all Powtoon users, including free plans.

Before you start

Before making your first Powtoon Capture recording, confirm you have the following:

A Powtoon account (any plan).
The Powtoon Capture Chrome extension installed from the Chrome Web Store.
A working webcam and microphone if you plan to record your face or audio.

How to make a recording

Install the Powtoon Capture Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store if you have not done so already.
Open Powtoon Capture in Chrome.
Choose what to record: your screen, your face, or both.
Start the recording.
► If the control menu covers part of your screen, drag it to a different area before continuing.
When you are finished, stop the recording.

What happens after you stop recording

After you stop a Powtoon Capture recording, Powtoon processes the capture and opens it in the Powtoon player page. The recording URL is copied to your clipboard automatically so you can share it straight away.

Your recordings are saved in your Workspace for 3 months from the recording date. After 3 months, they are deleted automatically.

Where to find your recordings

Go to My Powtoons.
Open your Toolbox.
Filter by Recording to see all your Powtoon Capture recordings.
To rename a capture, select the three dots on the thumbnail and choose Rename.
To check when a recording expires, hover over the info icon on the thumbnail.

Limits and plan differences

The following limits apply to all Powtoon Capture recordings:

Maximum recording length is 70 minutes.
Resolution options are SD (standard definition, 480p), HD (high definition, 720p), and Full HD (1080p). Full HD is available on paid plans only.
Free plans display a Powtoon watermark on recordings. Paid plans do not.
Captures that are 3 minutes or shorter can be opened in Powtoon Studio and edited like any other Powtoon.
Captures longer than 3 minutes are view-only. You can still share the link and, if your plan allows it, download the recording as an MP4 file.
In Present mode, nothing on your screen is recorded. You can use Present mode in any browser where the extension is installed.

The number of recordings you can store varies by plan and may change over time. Current storage limits by plan are approximately:

Agency: 500 recordings
Pro+: 300 recordings
Pro: 200 recordings
Educational: 200 recordings
Free: 100 recordings
