Powtoon Studio lets you add a video to a slide in two ways: as a background (behind all other content) or as an object (moveable, lockable, and animatable like any other element on the stage). Each slide supports up to two videos — one background video and one video object.
Before you start
- You must be working in Create mode in Powtoon Studio.
- To add a video as an object, use the Videos tab. To add a video as a background, use the Backgrounds tab.
- If the video you select is longer than the slide, Powtoon will prompt you to either extend the slide or trim the video.
Add a video as an object
Adding a video as an object places it on the stage, where you can reposition it, lock it in place, and apply entrance, exit, and movement effects.
- Go to the slide where you want to add the video.
- Select the Videos tab in the Powtoon Studio library panel.
- Search for a video or browse the available video libraries.
► Hover over a thumbnail to preview the video before adding it. - Select the video you want to add. The video appears on the stage as an object.
Add a video as a background
Adding a video as a background places it behind all other content on the slide. It cannot be moved or animated independently.
- Go to the slide where you want to add the video.
- Select the Backgrounds tab in the Powtoon Studio library panel.
- Search for a video or browse the available video libraries.
► Hover over a thumbnail to preview the video before adding it. - Select the video you want to add. The video is applied as the slide background.
Handle a video that is longer than the slide
If the video you add is longer than the current slide duration, Powtoon displays a prompt asking how you want to handle the difference.
- Review the prompt that appears after you select the video.
- Choose one of the following options:
- Extend Length — extends the slide duration to match the full length of the video.
- Trim Video — shortens the video to match the current slide duration.
Extend a video across multiple slides
If you want a video to continue playing across more than one slide, you can extend the slide after adding the video.
- Add the video to the slide using either method above.
- In the slide panel, locate the thumbnail for the slide you want to extend.
- Hover over the three dots in the bottom-right corner of the slide thumbnail.
- Click Extend.
- Adjust the new slide length if needed.
What happens after you add a video
- If you added the video as an object, you can move it around the stage, lock it in place, and apply entrance, exit, and movement effects.
- If the video is shorter than the slide, it plays until it ends and then the last frame stays visible for the remainder of the slide.
- Each slide supports a maximum of two videos: one background video and one video object.
